It’s safe to say that most of us are spending a lot more time at home these days than we’re used to. And with all that time at home, a lot of us are starting to notice...well, details about our houses we’re not crazy about.
When the schedule is filled with after-school sports practice, and playdates, and happy hours, it’s easy to overlook some of the issues around your home that need attention.
The good news, however, is that now is also an ideal time to start working on those issues with some cost-effective DIY projects. Here are a few tips for making the most of this time.
Talk about cost-effective--not only can decluttering be done for free, in your spare time, but it’s also proven to be one of the home improvement projects with the highest ROI!
Start with a single surface or space--that could be a drawer, a shelf, or a countertop. Start small and completely declutter that area in one go. That will give you a sense of accomplishment that makes it easier to keep the momentum going.
And if you’re on a time crunch--for example, if you want to put your house on the market urgently, despite COVID-19--focus on the highest-trafficked areas of your home.
Don’t worry about that upstairs storage closet right now. Instead, make sure the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom are in tip-top shape.
Up your curb appeal
Investing in curb appeal is always a smart move, but that’s especially the case when COVID selling strategies like drive- or walk-by “preliminary showings” are being instituted.
Mulching your garden beds, keeping your lawn mowed and edged, and sprucing up your front porch are all good places to start. If you have a patio or backyard, consider creating a welcoming outdoor space with furniture, lights, and perhaps a fire pit to get buyers thinking about spending summer evenings there.
Replace any torn or worn screens
Summer is the perfect time to replace torn or worn-out screens. Not only will you notice any holes more easily (flies in the house? Where did those come from?) but fixing them now will make it easier to open up your windows and doors for good airflow. And during COVID, good ventilation, along with cleaning and sanitizing frequently, can help prevent the disease from spreading.
Detail clean: vents, baseboards, blinds, and more
Focus on cleaning the things you usually overlook, like vents, baseboards, blinds, windows, etc.
Deep cleaning, just like decluttering, will give you an extremely high ROI for the work you put in. And as you’d expect, making your home as clean as possible is even more important during a pandemic! Buyers will appreciate the extra effort, and they’ll be able to see it even if they’re just doing a video showing.
